Tiffany 'The Budgetnista' Buys Out Newark Cityplex Screening of 'Harriet'

To some money represents freedom, to others it represents power, Tiffany Aliche sees it as a tool. The school teacher turned financial educator used that tool to share an important experience with her community this week when she bought out a Newark CityPlex screening of Harriet. The recently released film stars Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman and attempts to portray a fuller portrait of the woman behind the heroics. Aliche who goes by the Budgetnista revealed that the gift only cost her $1900 on her Facebook page.
“DO YOU HAVE $1,900,” she asked her online community of nearly half a million people.
“Yesterday was AMAZING! I was able to gift 200 people from my city, Newark, NJ with tickets to see the new @HarrietFilm at @shaq 's theater, @cityplex12_ ! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT CAME AND SPREAD THE WORD,” she added.
“Now back to that $1,900… That’s how much it cost to buy out the 200 seat theater. That’s $9.50 x 200 tickets.I’m sharing this because I want to demystify your ability to do something in service to your community.”
She asked her followers if they could envision themselves doing the same by pooling their resources.
“Could you get 19 friends to donate $100, so your community could see a film you thought was important?”

Aliche then provided other examples of the way $1900 could make a difference in a community.
“Could you get 19 friends to donate $100/year and use it to start a food pantry in conjunction with your local #UnitedWay ? Could you get 19 friends to donate $100 and buy books for 20 different classrooms in your city? What could YOU do with 19 friends and $100?"
She ended by giving them the reminder that, “There are no small acts of kindness, just kindness.”
