DJ Drewski, FatBoy SSE, and City Officials Celebrate Live Civil Day

In the summer of 2017 Karen Civil returned home to Elizabeth but she didn’t do it alone. The digital media maven partnered with Beats Headphones, Adidas, and others to give some of the city’s youngest residents with an unforgettable experience.

This year she did it again and inviting some of her influential peers. Rapper and social media star Fat Boy SSE, Love & Hip Hop Star and Hot 97 DJ Drewski, and Bryson Tiller’s manager Neil Dominique participated in the annual Live Civil Day Basketball Tournament, an event Civil organizes in an effort to help kids kick off the summer with a positive spirit.

Fellow Elizabeth natives Nabilah Smith and Keeyah Johnson helped Civil organize the event for second year in a row contributing to the community they grew up in.

Mayor Chris Bollwage, Council Woman-At-Large, Patricia Perkins-Auguste and other elected officials showed their support for Civil’s efforts. In 2017 Civil received one of only three keys to the City of Elizabeth for her philanthropic projects. She also served as the commencement speaker at her alma mater.

Elizabeth School Board Commissioner and owner of local Elizabeth eatery First Republic, who also helped put together the event, Stanley Neron was also on the scene, receiving arriving families with warm welcomes and directing everyone to all of the goodies available.

Attendees were treated to cotton candy, pizza, icees, and popcorn served by volunteers sporting the signature Live Civil Day tees.

The kids also got to enjoy the Mickey Walker Recreation Center’s miniature waterpark climbing through the netting and spraying one another with the park’s stationary water guns.

In addition to Beats and Adidas this year’s sponsors included Essentia Water and First Republik.

Civil and her friends posed for pictures with kids and their parents before presiding over a Jersey club style dance competition.

The basketball games themselves got heated with friends and family yelping out from the stands after every shot.

The players went home with Adidas backpacks full of goodies. For months after last year’s event the backpacks distributed there could be seen strewn around local soccer fields during practice.

The winning team once again took home a large silver trophy and everyone left ribbing one another about neighborhood rivalries, civilly of course.
